Al sinds ik de Youtube filmpjes ontdekte, is deze dame een van mijn grote inspiraties.
In de beginperiode van mijn make-up verslaving had ik alleen maar twee 88 palettes en wat slechte kwasten en daarmee trachtte ik toch wat van haar tutorials na te maken omdat ik het allemaal zó mooi en apart vond wat ze deed. Deze dame heeft een hele eigen stijl die ik erg bewonder.

Over wie heb ik het?

Siobhán McDonnell!

Siobhán  is de dame achter LetzMakeUp, meer over haar weten?

Sinds eind 2010 heeft Siobhán (uitgesproken als Shiv-Awn) namelijk, naast haar Youtube kanaal, ook een blog! Hier komen al haar filmpjes op te staan maar soms ook artikelen die enkel bestaan uit geschreven tekst. Daarnaast is ze ook nog eens een persoonlijk Youtube kanaal begonnen over alles wat niet beautygerelateerd is en hangt daar een blog aan vast. Ze heeft het er druk mee!

Ik ben vooral “aanhanger” van haar kanaal en blog vanwege haar geweldige looks en tutorials en het leek me dus wel eens leuk om haar wat vragen te stellen over haar Youtube kanalen en haar blogs. Zo heeft ze bijvoorbeeld een hele goede eyeliner tutorial gemaakt die ik ook graag nog wilde laten zien. Gelukkig vond ze dat geen probleem dus wil je haar in actie zien en leren hoe je een eyeliner met mooie wing kan maken? Bekijk dan ook even dit filmpje.

Ze maakte ook nog filmpjes over Liquid liner, Cream/Gel liner en Cake liner en dus bovenstaand filmpje. De bovenste vond ik het nuttigste ook voor algemene tips maar bekijk ze zeker allemaal want ze geeft erg handige tips.

Siobhán ( heeft een hele mooie eigen stijl die je heel snel herkent en daar hou ik wel van. hoe meer Make-up Artists je ziet, hoe meer je ook hun stijl gaat ontdekken. en die van Siobhán spreekt me heel erg aan. Ze heeft een beetje dat “alternatieve randje” wat ik erg mooi vind.

Ze heeft een creatieve achtergrond en heeft zelfs een tijdje zich verdiept in tatoeëren! Waarom het precies is weet ik niet maar ik vind haar een heerlijk stoere dame.
Ik mailde haar of ik haar wat vragen mocht stellen over het “youtuben”, haar blog en zo nog wel wat dingen.

Who are you and how old are you?
I am Siobhán McDonnell, a makeup artist and “online video producer” on Youtube. I will be 29yrs old this St. Patrick’s Day!! 17th March.

Where are you from?
I’m born and bred Irish. From Galway, on the The West Coast where I live now:)

Why did you start making video’s on Youtube and how did it evolve to what it is today?
I started making video’s just before I moved to London for the year in 2009 as I figured it might take me a while to settle in over there and get to know people, so I thought it’d be a good way to keep myself busy!! Also, I love makeup and talking about makeup, and watching
Youtube videos on makeup so I just wanted to be a part of this really cool makeup community that was such a novelty at the time!!

Why did you also add the blog letzmakeup.com
The main idea of the blog is that I can post reviews there etc when I don’t have time to film, edit etc for youtube which can take a long time sometimes!! Also it’s just a place to post accompanying pictures etc which I can’t do on Youtube!

Do you feel the blog adds something that you didn’t have with the Youtube video’s?
Yeah, like I said just there, it’s nice to add pictures that people can reference to without having to re-watch the video, and also any extra information like product list etc. It’s also nice to have my own little place on the internet ^_^

Do you have a job aside from the blog? If so, could you tell us more about that?
I work part-time as a makeup artist for Mac Cosmetics. It’s a retail job so we sell the makeup as well as apply it and give lessons etc. But I don’t represent myself as a Mac Makeup Artist on the Internetbecause it is an off-shoot of my free-lance makeup work. I also do free-lance work for weddings, photoshoots etc when I can get it!

Have you taken any lessons to become a make-up artist?
I did do a makeup artistry course a few years ago to get licenced butI was already fairly confident in my makeup application skills and art before that as I’m an artist first off. I went to art college so drawing, painting and makeup has always come easily to me. I love taking any classes or training that I can get as we never stop learning in this industry and I would get bored if there was nothing more for me to learn!

Where do you get your inspiration?
Coming from an art background I draw largely from art and colours, and colour theory. Also from other makeup artists and people who I watch on Youtube. There is so much inspiration on the internet which I would be lost without! I am big into tattoo’s also so that style of imagery can also sometimes creep into my designs and thinking. Fashion will always be one of my main sources of inspiration!

What is your favorite make-up brand?
I hate having to pick one brand as I love so many and try as many as I can, but I’d have to say Mac! I suppose that’s why I had applied and interviewed, but was not picked, twice before I actually finally got a job working for them. I kept trying because of how much I love their products and artistry! Saying that, I love MakeupForever, Inglot, Illamasqua, Laura Mercier, Sleek Makeup and so many more!!

How much time do you spend on your site and youtube on a daily basis?
I have to spend a couple of hours or so a day on my Letzmakeup channel just trying to reply to all the comments, e-mails and messagesetc. It’s a lot of work!! Updating my facebook and Letzmakeup.com generally doesn’t take too long but it all adds up I suppose. The biggest chunk of time goes into the editing and filming of tutorials and editing photo’s and such, but luckily I really enjoy it all!

You have 2 websites and 2 Youtube channels so how do you update all of them?
I pay way more attention to my makeup channel as it’s what I love to do and honestly it comes easy to me, my ShivInTheBox channel is more
of a Vlog & styling channel which I’d love to spend more time updating but at the moment I am working over-time at my counter job so don’t
have the time to do much with that. It’s all down to how much free time I have and unfortunately I don’t have much at the moment!

Do you ever run out of ideas or simply energy to keep everything updated?
Every now and again I take mini breaks from the internet. Sometimes Imight take a week off from making videos or a day or 2 off from e-mails and comments which makes all the difference but luckily I don’t find it too overwhelming yet

Does your blog influence your everyday routine?
Not everyday, but my days off from working at Mac are largely spent on my internet stuff! During the winter when it’s horrible weather outside, I love playing with my makeup and posting reviews etc but during the warmer weather it can be a little harder to make time for my Youtube channel and blog.

What is your dream when you think about the future of your blog/Youtube Channel?
Really I just want to keep going exactly as I am. Unlike some people who happily admit to it, I really don’t want to be famous or anything daft like that, ha ha. I’m such a shy person in reality except around my friends and family! I do consider this a part-time job now and it’s an extension of my free-lance work, so it’s a way of promoting myself and my work as a makeup artist.

Do you have any friends or people around you with the same love for make-up?
My friends from work and past makeup jobs are really the only ones who are as bonkers about makeup as I am, but saying that, my sisters have gotten more & more into makeup from having had to listen to mefor so long!!

Does your family and friends read your blog? Do you ever get any comments on it from them?
Some of them do. I get the odd comment from them but generally they’ll just tell me in person!

What are your favorite blogs/websites?
I of course watch a lot of Youtube videos still daily! I like makeupandbeauty.ie which is by another Irish Youtuber, Amy Dillon aka Dazzledust25. I love GlamRocksLuna fashion blog, also Irish. Then I love Temptalia etc. Generally all makeup blogs!

What’s your favorite make-up product of this moment?
I am loving my Mineralize Skin Finish Natural by Mac. It’s the best powder ever!!

Do you ever work on a tutorial that doesn’t make it online because it didn’t work out the way you want it to or because you don’t like the result? Can you give us an example?
Believe it or not this has only happened to me about 2 or 3 times over my entire youtube life!! Everyone has their off days and I’m no exception but I think I practice enough that it doesn’t happen too often! I can’t think of the exact examples off the top of my head but I do know that it  happens when I try to use too many colours or when I over-complicate a look.

What current trend do you love? And which one makes you hope it will disappear soon?
I loved the artistic & graphic eyeliner trend we saw recently. There’s nothing I really hate but there are some trends like red lips and the “no-makeup look” that are re-hashed every season that can get a little bit boring. Saying that, I love red lips and natural makeup!!

Beauty websites and blogs grow more popular every day, what do you think of that?
I think it’s brilliant! It’s so great for people interested in makeup and getting into the industry as a source of information. I creditthese sites as some of my biggest sources of learning! Especially for people who live in countries where classes and books etc are harder to come across or non-existent.
